A patch of Carolinian Forest is tucked under the protection of a rock cliff. In the early Spring, trilliums and wild leeks carpet the forest floor. Deer, moose and wolves are a regular part of the landscape. The Great Blue Herons and other large birds nest together by the river in the Spring.

It is a unique area with naturally regenerated forest and extensive wetlands, The park contains several sites of ecological value and habitats that support rare species. Some surprising endangered birds and rare plant species have been spotted on the property.

The driveway off the Black River Road heads up the hill to the site of the original homestead, following the path the early farmers used for their wagons. That stone foundation on top of the hill remains one of three approved building sites. And the existing cabin by the river can be rebuilt without a permit.
