Mountainside Co-op Living Near Nelson

Near Nelson, BC

The Maa Land Co-operative is looking for new members. Look no further if you’d like to live in a forested, rustic, off-grid setting, in an alternative community as well as having access to the services of a small, fun city. The Maa Co-op was established in 1994 on 88 acres on Bird Creek (15 km west of Nelson) with the mission of providing land for affordable rural housing. Since that time, we’ve built houses, community, a micro-hydro system and perma-culture gardens.  Our lifestyles are Earth-based, simple and rustic.

Currently, 8 adults and 4 children (6 and under) live full time at Maa with two more kids being part-time. We are looking for new members who are ecologically-minded, quee r and trans-positive and are interested in good communication and sustainable living/self-sufficiency. We are looking for year-round, full-time residents to join our community and all its endeavors. If collaborative home-schooling is of interest, the existing families are interested as well.

The Squirrel's Nest one acre housesite is a sweet, private, finished, two bedroom, 700 sq foot house in the forest with an established private garden and root cellar. There are outdoor bathing and toilet facilities. Members share various outbuildings, equipment, tools and a large common garden. Please note that Maa is rustic, off-grid, mostly forested mountainside, with walk in winter access and lots of snow!  A level of physical fitness and capability is necessary for this lifestyle and pratical rural skills are useful. We have a one year trial period for potential new members. The land and all the housesites are owned by the Co-op with members holding shares.  Hence, there is no individual title for houses and thus are not mortagable by a bank. The outgoing land partner is open to discussing vendor financing. Also, the prospects for insuring houses is low.
