LGBT-Run Plant-Based Intentional Community in Canada
Type: ecovillage / intentional community / cooperative living
My partner and I were just talking about some of the older communities in Ontario. Many years ago she had the opportunity to visit, on a number of occasions, Dragonfly Farm. That would have been in the early '80s. She describes it as an interesting experience in many ways, recalling how intense it was to be invited to a community that was seeking "a better way" generally stated. She also recalls how being gay really was not always embraced as "acceptable" for some, and remembers, for some, a better way did not mean accepting other than straight expressions of sexuality. She remembers thinking to herself, "one day when I'm old enough, I will invite everyone to a community that I am part of, regardless of how one expresses their lived experience."
I myself have long envisioned the development of a combined EcoVillage Community/Animal Sanctuary space that offers healthy, diverse, sustainable community for those who wish to reside within the community space, acting as a model of a holistic and compassionate sustainabile living, while also providing a learning centre space for those interested in experiencing the community through workshops, retreats, or intensive holistic plant-based lifestyle courses. The vision is vast (with much more detail that I am happy to share at another time), and very possible, and already underway in its development...
We are a same-sex couple looking for any willing individual to come and be with us full-time. We became involved with Russ, president of the Ecovillage Network of Canada, a while back and, although we have not yet met in person, he generated a true sense of acceptance for us. We live in an entirely different world from back in those days when my partner first explored communities, however, there is still those who just can't get past the sexuality thing...
Additionally, we are committed to a community model that views non-human animals as co-citizens of the community, offers aging-in-place opportunities, operates from a intersectional approach to social and environmental justice advocacy, and zero-waste lifestyle... And incorporates other values, including: minimalism, holistic health (we are both healthcare professionals with a combined 40+ years experience), organic permaculture, fair trade, barter, sharing economy, whole-foods plant-based lifestyle, natural building, raw food, solar cooking, food preservation, and off-grid tiny house community development.
We co-founded the non-profit organization, Forever MicroRanch: A Community Living Project, and initially developed the farmed animal sanctuary aspect of our model. Now, we are well established within this aspect, and presently at the stage of developing the ecovillage/community living aspect of the non-profit. The property is a beautifully chemical-free, nicely-treed fifteen acres with a 2500 sq ft farmhouse, a large cement-floor insulated quonset, several other outbuildings, and the beginnings of a 12,600 sq ft permaculture-based food-forest/garden space, including 20+ fruit trees.
We are located in the very South of Saskatchewan about fifteen minutes from the Montana border...and before you cringe, it is incredibly beautiful, with lovely, mild and temperate weather thanks to the chinook winds we get down in this corner. We are from Vancouver and Toronto originally and we chose this place specifically because it's spectacularly beautiful, and virtually undiscovered...and a really development zone for plant-based eating, new development techniques, etc. There are lots of farmers in the area exploring growing new things, regenerative growing practices...all kinds of innovations here for sustainable living!
We need a full-time animal care taker and food grower. We have a great thing going here and we are now ready to plant some food, and to find an individual, couple, or small family that can be plant-based while living here. We can offer accommodation and some food, and a space to develop sustainable business. For real! And, we are accepting of everyone!
If this is something that might be of interest to you, we would be delighted to hear from you!
